A glow observed in the northern sky, caused by electrons from the solar wind colliding with the Earth's magnetosphere. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and March to April. Its southern counterpart "aurora australis," has similar properties, so scientists prefer "polar aurora" (or "aurora polaris"). Each curtain consists of many parallel rays, each lined up with the local direction of the magnetic field lines, suggesting that aurora is shaped by the Earth's magnetic field.
